Welcome to the Cerebral Mix Episode 19: Soft Phases

Host: SoundChaser

A few weeks ago I was watching my Twitter and Identica feeds, when I saw
a message pop up about a netlabel remix release by Planet Boelex – a
name I am quite familiar with. Naturally, my curiosity was piqued, so I
followed the link to the release page.

Turns out, Planet Boelex had put together a continuous mix of a
selection of tracks from the first thirteen releases from a netlable
called Soft Phase… One of several hundred netlables I had not
encountered before.

I looked over the release, and saw a lot of names I’ve encountered over
the years, including: Coax, Mikael Fyrek, Planet Boelex, Mosaik, bad
loop, and Transient. Immediately, I knew I had to hear this release: I
was exceptionally pleased with what I heard. So, I contacted the Soft
Phase operator and asked if I could present this mix on my show. Not
only were they happy to allow me to use this release, but they provided
me a FLAC version of the mix to enable you to have the highest quality
listening experience.

So, this week, I present without any interruptions the Introduction to
Soft Phase.

Welcome to the Cerebral Mix Episode 18: Fantastic Alternate Universes…

Host: SoundChaser

Fat Chance Lester is a new group that has just released two albums under
CreativeCommons licenses. When I was asked to listen to them and
consider doing a “release party” show on CerebralMix, I jumped
at the chance. Why? The request came from Klaatu, who, as I have come
to know, has an interesting range of music interests. I knew that even
though I hadn’t heard of Fat Chance Lester before the music would be
interesting and be something that listeners of The CerebralMix would
likely find interesting.

So, this week, along with the Juiced Penguin OggCast, I am happy to
present the release party for Fat Chance Lester. Their unique sound
pulls on many influences in prog-rock and jazz to form a tribute to many
of the pulp-fiction stories of the past that most geeks and nerds are
familiar with. I hope you will have fun exploring Fat Chance Lester’s
Fantastic Alternate Universes…

Welcome to the Cerebral Mix Episode 17: Intersections In Four

Host: SoundChaser

This week’s show takes a slightly different format. As I was working my
way through the back catalog of music, I found that I had a number of
tracks from EP’s that were just waiting to be played. In particular,
one EP was an ambient work from Abyssal Plains, and another a more
Trip-Hop Jazz fusion oriented work.

While stylistically they works are very different, I found that the
shared a common element: the number four.

In the first half of the show, we are going to hear the “Fourth Quadrant
of the Mandala” by Abyssal Plains. The mandala comes from the Buddhist
and Hindu belief systems. They are frequently used for meditation and
as a spiritual teaching tool.

In the second half of the show, we are going to hear “The Hard Changing
of the Seasons” by Zero V. This work builds on many of the past jazz
masters to present a different way of looking at the changing of the
Beyond the seaons and the Mandala, there are quite a few other things
that occur in fours:

The four corners of compass.

The key aspects of luck (belief in luck, rejection of luck, being lucky and being unlucky).

The four leaf clover.

The Meyers-Briggs four dichotomies of personality.

The hour horsemen of the apocolypse (death, war, famine and pestilence)

The four gospels (Matthew, Mark, John and Luke)

Musical quartets: string quartets, vocal quartets, etc.

The common time in music: four beats to a measure.

The four elements (earth, fire, wind and water)

And even: the four suits of a deck of cards (which could by way of gambling, ironically be linked back to the aspects of luck).

Numerologists probably have a field day with the number four and all of
the symbolism around it. In the case of our listening, four tends to be
quite well represented. In the case of the recordings today, two
seeming disparate subjects found a common ground through the number
four.

Who’s to say there isn’t something to things that relate to each other
through numbers in some way?

And with that final though we have reached the end of another episode.
I hope you will join me again next week for another adventure into the
sounds between thoughts on The Cerebral Mix.

Welcome to the Cerebral Mix Episode 16: In The Beginning, Part 3

Host: SoundChaser

This week we take a final journey into the Early Works of Andrew
Cuathen.

Andrew is many things: a freegan, musician, philosopher, and extreme
individual. A look through his blog contains articles about water cars,
David Icke interview videos about humanity, James Fox on the BP Oil
Spill, and how Food is the equivalent of crack.

Either because or in spite of these opinions, Andrew’s musical works
become more interesting. It becomes clear with just looking through a
few of the releases he has made that he doesn’t follow conventions.

So, let’s take that last step into the unconventional soundscapes of
Andrew Cauthen on The CerebralMix.

I’m honestly not certain how to reconcile Andrew’s music after seeing
some of his writing. On one hand, I could see his writing as being
similar to a “shock jock” style of blogging – trying to use extreme
opinions in order to make us all think about ourselves and our place in
society and the world. And, along the way, making us laugh at ourself.

On the other hand, I could take him at his literal word, and think that
he is almost an alien to our culture and society.

Either way, it’s his extreme opinions and views that inform his music.
While I think of him as something of an “outsider musician” (along the
lines of outsider artists), he brings a lot of his own values to his
music. And it’s those values that make his work worth listening to.

CerebralMix Episode 13: …Perchance To Dream

Host: SoundChaser & Sexy Suzy Soundz

This week’s episode is something of a surprise: a special request.

With the upcoming Ohio Linux Festival the second weekend in September,
one of the OggCastPlanet members asked if I could put together an
episode of the CerebralMix to help him fall asleep at night.

When I tried to inquire further about what kind of music he wanted for
such an episode he responded: “surprise me.”

So, here’s the surprise: an episode of the CerebralMix that reaches out
in all sorts of directions from abstract dark ambient, to classical, to
jazz and many genres in between…all while being softer and more
relaxing for sleeping, and perchance, for dreaming…

Closing Note

This week’s episode was a lot of fun to put together. I knew when I
started that I had a handful of recently acquired tracks I hadn’t been
able to use in other episodes. And I also had a few favorite tracks that
I had wanted to use, that just fit with this theme.

With all this material very quickly in place, I had the chance to play a
bit… I was able to sit down and come up with a way to assemble the
show that I feel will improve the overall quality, and this episode
reflects those improvements: silences at the beginning and end of the
tracks have been trimmed more cleanly, levels are matched between tracks
better, the segues are more consistent, and the timing of the
transitions are better.

So, what does this mean for the show overall? It means I will be
able to focus more time selecting and researching materials for the
show. It means that I will be able to develop more themes and more
surprises: I will be able to focus on the more human elements, rather
than on the process of assembling the show.

All of this just goes to show the power of Free Software. None of this
would be possible without the tools available to me from the Open Source
community. I owe a major debt of gratitude to the Open Source community
for providing me the tools to make it so much easier to explore the
sounds between thoughts, on The CerebralMix.

CerebralMix Episode 12: In The Beginning Pt 1

Host: SoundChaser

Andrew Cauthen has been making a lot of music for well over a decade. A
single man with a keyboard, a computer and the drive to translate the
world around him into sound.

His interpretations take on many forms: techno to ambient, and numerous
styles in-between, and a few styles that may be his own invention.

In this the first of three episodes of the CerebralMix, we spend and
hour examining some of the early works of Andrew Cauthen as compiled on
his “Early Ones” releases.

With ten hours of music in just the compilation of his early works,
Andrew Cauthen distinguishes himself. Not because his work is
groundbreaking or different: in fact he uses forms that are recognizable
and popular, and yet he also reserves space to investigate forms that
are different and unique to his perspective.

And, that’s where the value of his work presents itself. Andrew is an
interpreter of the world around him, and it’s his unique perception of
the world that comes out in his audio interpretations.

The ideas and thoughts he investigates are put on level ground. It
doesn’t make a difference if it’s a small idea (“19th Street Coffee”) or
some unique and revealing perspective (“Time Is A Slippery Slope”). All
ideas are explored deflty from his perspective.

And, this brings us to the end of the exploration of Andrew Cauthen’s
works for this week. I hope you will join me again for another
exploration of the sounds between thoughts on The CerebralMix.

1 Introduction

The guitar is possibly one of the most unique instruments in music. It’s roots can be traced back approximately 3,300 years. Throughout history, there have been many names for instruments of similar construction (if not always similar in timbre and tone): oud, lute, cithara, and vihuela just to name a few.

The emergence of what could be seen as the modern acoustic (or classical) guitar occured in about the 12th century in Europe. However, after the Baroque period, the guitar seems to have fallen out of favor until it re-emerged in the 1800′s.

The electric guitar dates from the 1930′s. It’s first application was in the country swing bands of the period, allowing it to produce sound of equal volume to the rest of the band. Adoption of the electric guitar in jazz and rock assured that it was an instrument with a long road ahead of it.

This week, the first of a series of occasional shows, we present both acoustic and electric guitars in settings as diverse as progressive rock, ambient, jazz, death metal, blues, and more. So be prepared for just about anything in the world of the guitar, this week, on the CerebralMix.

3 Closing Notes

Frank Zappa once said something along the lines of the electric guitar being the one instrument capable of producing truely annoying or disgusting noises.

While certainly the instrument is capable of that, it is also capable of great beauty and highly dynamic expression. The guitar has come a long way in the past 3000+ years to become one of the predominant instruments in many cultures.

I hope you have enjoyed this journey into just a few of those cultures and spaces on the CerebralMix.
